On 29 October, GPC will organize the Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GPC) stakeholder consultation workshops in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania as a pre-event to the biennial Local Climate Solutions for Africa 2013 congress taking place from 30 October – 1 November 2013.
The World Resources Institute (WRI), C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40), and ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) are jointly developing an international greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting standard for cities, called the Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GPC).
WRI is home to the GHG Protocol, an initiative that established the first-ever global standard on corporate GHG emissions reporting, and is the basis for all corporate GHG reporting worldwide. C40 and ICLEI each engage networks of cities internationally on practical ways of integrating sustainability in the fabric of city operations.
In May 2012, GPC Pilot Version 1.0 was released. Currently, we are continuing pilot testing with 35 cities and communities around the world. We plan to complete the full standard for publication in 2014.
To supplement the pilot test, about 10 stakeholder consultation workshops in different regions of the world will be hosted. GPC held the first workshop in Sao Paulo, Brazil in May 2013, bringing together more than 200 Brazilian city officials and experts to discuss how to use the GPC to measure and manage city GHG emissions. On 29 October, GPC will organize the GPC Africa Workshop Session in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
