We call upon African local government leaders, associations of local governments and local government networks in Africa to pledge their commitment to the Ekurhuleni Declaration on Water and Sanitation. The Ekurhuleni Declaration on Water and Sanitation for Cities calls for urgent collective and complimentary action in implementing innovative and effective integrated strategies to ensure water security on the rapidly urbanising continent of Africa. ICLEI Africa and the City of Ekurhuleni, with support from the South Africa Ministry of Environmental Affairs, Ministry of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, United Cities and Local Governments Africa (UCLG-Africa) and C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group committed to elevate the declaration to the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW), and the Secretary General of the United Nations.

The Ekurhuleni Declaration on Water and Sanitation for Cities was adopted and emerged as the key outcome of the Local Climate Solutions for Africa 2017 Congress held in the City of Ekurhuleni from 22 – 24 March 2017.
